Knowing

Knowing is currently streaming in the US on YouTube TV and MovieSphere+ Amazon Channel, and in the UK on Lionsgate+ Amazon Channels, and it earns its premise rather than just borrowing genre trappings. It knows exactly what kind of film it is from the opening scene, and never loses that thread. A 6/10 rating says what the writing already makes obvious: this one works. Nicolas Cage's performance is the anchor the more ambitious scenes need. There is no real reason to keep putting it off — it is right there on YouTube TV.

Whatever else is competing for your attention this week, Knowing is worth clearing space for. Knowing treats its concept seriously enough to follow it all the way through. A teacher opens a time capsule that has been dug up at his son's elementary school; in it are some chilling predictions -- some that have already occurred and others that are about to -- that lead him to believe his family plays a role in the events that are about to unfold. Nicolas Cage and Rose Byrne lead a cast that never lets the concept overwhelm the characters. It was released in 2009. Knowing resists the temptation to explain everything, trusting the audience to sit with ambiguity. It delivers reliably on what it promises, which is more than most of its competition manages.

For late-night viewing or a proper weekend binge, Knowing fits the bill. It stands on its own even without an obvious comparison point. Short enough to finish in one sitting, substantial enough to feel satisfying. Nicolas Cage anchors it with a performance that makes the more abstract moments feel personal. If you have been burned by ambitious sci-fi before, this is the exception.
