This week's easiest comedy pick in the US on Netflix, and in the UK on Amazon Prime Video is Laggies. It says what it needs to say in one sitting, no filler. With 1,184 viewer ratings on TMDB, this is not a title flying under the radar. Keira Knightley's performance alone is worth the time investment. There is no real reason to keep putting it off — it is right there on Netflix.
Part of the current wave of titles people are actually watching, Laggies earns its spot. Laggies gets the fundamentals right first, then finds room to get weird with it. Overeducated and underemployed, 28 year old Megan is in the throes of a quarterlife crisis. Squarely into adulthood with no career prospects, no particular motivation to think about her future and no one to relate to, Megan is comfortable lagging a few steps behind - while her friends check off milestones and celebrate their new grown-up status. When her high-school sweetheart proposes, Megan panics and- given an unexpected opportunity to escape for a week - hides out in the home of her new friend, 16-year old Annika and Annika's world-weary single dad Craig. Keira Knightley and Chloë Grace Moretz lead a cast with the timing to make it work. It hit screens in 2014. What keeps Laggies from feeling disposable is a cast that clearly understands the material better than the format usually demands. It delivers reliably on what it promises, which is more than most of its competition manages.
For viewers who want something light without wanting something stupid, Laggies respects your intelligence. It rewards viewers regardless of what else is in their watch history. A contained runtime means every scene is doing real work. Keira Knightley's comic timing carries it through its weaker moments. The kind of comedy you recommend to someone who claims they do not watch much.
Laggies was released in 2014, directed by Lynn Shelton. The full 100-minute film is available to watch now.
