Lord of War is not trying to be everything to everyone, and that focus is exactly what makes it work. The plotting gives Lord of War its backbone, but it is the characters you come back for. Yuri Orlov is a globetrotting arms dealer and, through some of the deadliest war zones, he struggles to stay one step ahead of a relentless Interpol agent, his business rivals and even some of his customers who include many of the world's most notorious dictators. Finally, he must also face his own conscience. The writing gets a boost from Nicolas Cage and Bridget Moynahan, who sell every scene they're in. Lord of War came out in 2005. Lord of War is at its best in the quiet scenes between the plot beats, where the character work actually happens. It knows exactly what it is, and does not try to be anything else.

If you cannot walk away from a good mystery, Lord of War will keep you hooked. It rewards viewers regardless of what else is in their watch history. A contained runtime means every scene is doing real work. Nicolas Cage carries scenes that would sink a lesser production. The resolution feels inevitable rather than arbitrary, which is rarer than it sounds.
