Part of the current wave of titles people are actually watching, Maximum Overdrive earns its spot. Maximum Overdrive uses its genre premise as cover for asking bigger questions. When a comet passes close to the earth, machines all over the world come alive and go on homicidal rampages. A group of people at a desolate truck stop are held hostage by a gang of murderous 18-wheelers. The frightened people set out to defeat the killer machines…Or be killed by them. Emilio Estevez and Pat Hingle lead a cast that never lets the concept overwhelm the characters. It was released in 1986. The world-building is meticulous enough to sustain multiple rewatches, with details early on that only make sense later. It delivers reliably on what it promises, which is more than most of its competition manages.

For late-night viewing or a proper weekend binge, Maximum Overdrive fits the bill. If you have run out of similar titles to watch, this is a strong next pick. Best experienced as a single, sustained watch from start to finish. Emilio Estevez anchors it with a performance that makes the more abstract moments feel personal.
