A tight runtime that never overstays its welcome. A 7/10 rating says what the writing already makes obvious: this one works. Watch it for Trevante Rhodes — one of the stronger performances out there right now. Start it on Amazon Prime Video whenever you need something guaranteed to land.

Moonlight arrived without much fanfare and built its audience the hard way — through word of mouth. Character-driven storytelling at its most effective — Moonlight earns every emotional beat it goes for. The tender, heartbreaking story of a young man’s struggle to find himself, told across three defining chapters in his life as he experiences the ecstasy, pain, and beauty of falling in love, while grappling with his own sexuality. Trevante Rhodes and André Holland lead a cast doing genuinely serious work here. Moonlight came out in 2016. The performances in Moonlight do a lot of work in the silences between the dialogue. There is real craft here, even in the moments that do not fully land.

Drama fans who appreciate slow-burn storytelling will feel right at home with Moonlight. It rewards viewers regardless of what else is in their watch history. Best experienced as a single, sustained watch from start to finish. Trevante Rhodes carries the material with a performance that rewards close attention. Worth starting sooner rather than later.
