One Shot

One Shot has quietly become one of the more dependable crime dramas currently available in the US on Hulu, and in the UK on Sky Go and Now TV Cinema. It knows exactly what kind of film it is from the opening scene, and never loses that thread. A 7/10 rating says what the writing already makes obvious: this one works. Scott Adkins anchors it, but the writing does the real work. There is no real reason to keep putting it off — it is right there on Hulu.

Part of the current wave of titles people are actually watching, One Shot earns its spot. The plotting gives One Shot its backbone, but it is the characters you come back for. An elite squad of Navy SEALs, on a covert mission to transport a prisoner off a CIA black site island prison, are trapped when insurgents attack while trying to rescue the same prisoner. Scott Adkins and Ashley Greene lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was released in 2021. The plot mechanics of One Shot never overwhelm the human cost underneath them. There is real craft here, even in the moments that do not fully land.

If you cannot walk away from a good mystery, One Shot will keep you hooked. It does not lean on comparisons to make its case. Best experienced as a single, sustained watch from start to finish.
