One & Two

This week's smartest sci-fi pick in the US on Philo and AMC Plus Apple TV Channel is One & Two. The length is exactly right for the story it is telling — nothing rushed, nothing dragged out. A 6/10 rating says what the writing already makes obvious: this one works. Timothée Chalamet sets the tone, and the world-building does the rest. There is no real reason to keep putting it off — it is right there on Philo.

There is a reason One & Two keeps coming up in conversation. One & Two uses its genre premise as cover for asking bigger questions. In an isolated farmhouse, located in the middle of nowhere and surrounded by a mysterious wooden wall, Zac and Eva, two siblings gifted with extraordinary abilities, endure every day the wrath of their strict father while witnessing how a cruel sickness lurks their beloved mother. Timothée Chalamet and Kiernan Shipka lead a cast that never lets the concept overwhelm the characters. It was released in 2015. What separates One & Two from lesser genre entertainment is a willingness to let the concept cost the characters something. It delivers reliably on what it promises, which is more than most of its competition manages.

For late-night viewing or a proper weekend binge, One & Two fits the bill. It stands on its own even without an obvious comparison point. Best experienced as a single, sustained watch from start to finish. Timothée Chalamet anchors it with a performance that makes the more abstract moments feel personal. If you have been burned by ambitious sci-fi before, this is the exception.
