There is a reason Outbreak keeps coming up in conversation. The world-building is meticulous, but it is the characters who carry Outbreak through its more ambitious moments. A deadly airborne virus finds its way into the USA and starts killing off people at an epidemic rate. Col. Sam Daniels' job is to stop the virus spreading from a small town, which must be quarantined, and to prevent an over reaction by the White House. Dustin Hoffman and Rene Russo lead a cast that never lets the concept overwhelm the characters. It was released in 1995. The rules of Outbreak's world are consistent enough that the big swings never feel like cheating. It delivers reliably on what it promises, which is more than most of its competition manages.

Outbreak is satisfying on multiple levels — something to watch and something to think about after. It rewards viewers regardless of what else is in their watch history.
