Whatever else is competing for your attention this week, Places in the Heart is worth clearing space for. The writing in Places in the Heart treats its characters as people first, plot devices second. In 1935 rural Texas, recently widowed Edna Spaulding struggles to survive with two small children, a farm to run, and very little money in the bank - not to mention a deadly tornado and the unwelcome presence of the Ku Klux Klan. Edna is aided by her beautician sister, Margaret; a blind boarder, Mr. Will; and a would-be thief, Moze, who decides to teach Edna how to plant and harvest cotton. Sally Field and Lindsay Crouse lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was released in 1984. What elevates Places in the Heart is a refusal to let any character off the hook too easily. There is real craft here, even in the moments that do not fully land.
Viewers drawn to character-driven storytelling will find plenty to sit with in Places in the Heart. It rewards viewers regardless of what else is in their watch history. A contained runtime means every scene is doing real work. Sally Field anchors a cast that never overplays its hand. The kind of drama that stays with you well after the finale.
