Astronaut Taylor crash lands on a distant planet ruled by apes who use a primitive race of humans for experimentation and sport. Soon Taylor finds himself among the hunted, his life in the hands of a benevolent chimpanzee scientist. The human element stays intact thanks to Charlton Heston and Roddy McDowall, who anchor every scene. It hit screens in 1968. What separates Planet of the Apes from lesser genre entertainment is a willingness to let the concept cost the characters something. It rarely drops the ball, and when it does, it recovers fast.

Planet of the Apes is satisfying on multiple levels — something to watch and something to think about after. It does not lean on comparisons to make its case. A contained runtime means every scene is doing real work. Charlton Heston anchors it with a performance that makes the more abstract moments feel personal.
