Point Break has quietly become one of the more dependable crime dramas currently available in the US on fuboTV and Peacock Premium, and in the UK on Amazon Prime Video. It knows exactly what kind of film it is from the opening scene, and never loses that thread. A 7/10 rating says what the writing already makes obvious: this one works. Part of the current wave of titles people are actually watching, Point Break earns its spot. Point Break treats its mystery as a means, not an end in itself. In Los Angeles, a gang of bank robbers who call themselves The Ex-Presidents commit their crimes while wearing masks of Reagan, Carter, Nixon and Johnson. Believing that the members of the gang could be surfers, the F.B.I. Sends young agent Johnny Utah to the beach undercover to mix with the surfers and gather information. Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze lead a cast that gives the tension real weight. It was released in 1991. The plot mechanics of Point Break never overwhelm the human cost underneath them. It delivers reliably on what it promises, which is more than most of its competition manages.

If you cannot walk away from a good mystery, Point Break will keep you hooked. It does not lean on comparisons to make its case. Short enough to finish in one sitting, substantial enough to feel satisfying. Keanu Reeves anchors it, but the writing does the real work.
