Prancer

Between the endless list of sci-fi options, Prancer in Australia on Amazon Prime Video, and in the US on Amazon Prime Video and fuboTV is the one that earns the time. The length is exactly right for the story it is telling — nothing rushed, nothing dragged out. 108 viewers have already rated it on TMDB — the kind of consensus that does not happen by accident. Rebecca Harrell Tickell's performance is the anchor the more ambitious scenes need. There is no real reason to keep putting it off — it is right there on Amazon Prime Video.

Whatever else is competing for your attention this week, Prancer is worth clearing space for. What makes Prancer work is that the ideas never crowd out the people having them. Jessica, the daughter of an impoverished apple farmer, still believes in Santa Claus. So when she comes across a reindeer with an injured leg, it makes perfect sense to her to assume that it is Prancer, who had fallen from a Christmas display in town. She hides the reindeer in her barn and feeds it cookies, until she can return it to Santa. Rebecca Harrell Tickell and Sam Elliott lead a cast that makes the ambitious moments land. It was released in 1989. The world-building is meticulous enough to sustain multiple rewatches, with details early on that only make sense later. It knows exactly what it is, and does not try to be anything else.

Prancer is satisfying on multiple levels — something to watch and something to think about after. It does not lean on comparisons to make its case. Short enough to finish in one sitting, substantial enough to feel satisfying. Rebecca Harrell Tickell anchors it with a performance that makes the more abstract moments feel personal. If you have been burned by ambitious sci-fi before, this is the exception.
