Prometheus

Prometheus is currently streaming in Australia on Netflix and Disney Plus, and in the US on HBO Max Amazon Channel and YouTube TV, and it earns its premise rather than just borrowing genre trappings. The runtime earns every minute, with nothing here that feels like padding. A 7/10 rating says what the writing already makes obvious: this one works. Noomi Rapace anchors it with a performance that grounds the bigger ideas in something human. There is no real reason to keep putting it off — it is right there on Netflix.

There is a reason Prometheus keeps coming up in conversation. The world-building is meticulous, but it is the characters who carry Prometheus through its more ambitious moments. A team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race. Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender lead a cast that never lets the concept overwhelm the characters. Prometheus came out in 2012. The rules of Prometheus's world are consistent enough that the big swings never feel like cheating. There is real craft here, even in the moments that do not fully land.

Viewers burned by ambitious sci-fi that could not sustain its premise should give Prometheus a chance. It stands on its own even without an obvious comparison point. The complete film is available and best experienced without too much prior knowledge of where it goes. Watch for Noomi Rapace in particular — the performance elevates the material.
