Whatever else is competing for your attention this week, RoboCop is worth clearing space for. What makes RoboCop work is that the ideas never crowd out the people having them. In a violent, near-apocalyptic Detroit, evil corporation Omni Consumer Products wins a contract from the city government to privatize the police force. To test their crime-eradicating cyborgs, the company leads street cop Alex Murphy into an armed confrontation with crime lord Boddicker so they can use his body to support their untested RoboCop prototype. But when RoboCop learns of the company's nefarious plans, he turns on his masters. Peter Weller and Nancy Allen lead a cast that makes the ambitious moments land. It was released in 1987. What separates RoboCop from lesser genre entertainment is a willingness to let the concept cost the characters something. There is real craft here, even in the moments that do not fully land.

For late-night viewing or a proper weekend binge, RoboCop fits the bill. It rewards viewers regardless of what else is in their watch history. Short enough to finish in one sitting, substantial enough to feel satisfying. Peter Weller anchors it with a performance that makes the more abstract moments feel personal.
