When the Vatican gets word of Frankie's situation, a high-ranking cardinal requests that the Rev. Andrew Kiernan investigate her case. Patricia Arquette and Gabriel Byrne lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was released in 1999. The plot mechanics of Stigmata never overwhelm the human cost underneath them. It delivers reliably on what it promises, which is more than most of its competition manages.
