A group of eminent scientists led by Dr. Jeremy Stone scrambles to a secure laboratory and tries first to isolate the life form while determining why two people from Piedmont - an old alcoholic and a six-month-old baby - survived. Arthur Hill and David Wayne lead a cast that keeps the bigger ideas grounded in something human. It was released in 1971. The world-building is meticulous enough to sustain multiple rewatches, with details early on that only make sense later. It knows exactly what it is, and does not try to be anything else.

Viewers burned by ambitious sci-fi that could not sustain its premise should give The Andromeda Strain a chance. It does not lean on comparisons to make its case.
