The Big Lebowski

The Big Lebowski has quietly become one of the more dependable comedies currently available in the US on Netflix, and in the UK on Amazon Prime Video. The length is exactly right for the story it is telling — nothing rushed, nothing dragged out. An 8/10 rating says what the writing already makes obvious: this one works. Jeff Bridges is the obvious draw, but the whole ensemble earns its laughs. There is no real reason to keep putting it off — it is right there on Netflix.

Between them, Jeff Bridges and John Goodman carry the comedy without ever forcing it. It was released in 1998. What keeps The Big Lebowski from feeling disposable is a cast that clearly understands the material better than the format usually demands. It rarely drops the ball, and when it does, it recovers fast.

If you need a comedy that actually makes you laugh, The Big Lebowski is a strong candidate. It has built its own audience without needing a direct comparison.
