Johnny Smith is a schoolteacher with his whole life ahead of him but, after leaving his fiancee's home one night, is involved in a car crash which leaves him in a coma for 5 years. When he wakes, he discovers he has an ability to see into the past, present and future life of anyone with whom he comes into physical contact. Christopher Walken and Brooke Adams lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was released in 1983. What separates The Dead Zone from lesser genre entertainment is a willingness to let the concept cost the characters something. It knows exactly what it is, and does not try to be anything else.

For late-night viewing or a proper weekend binge, The Dead Zone fits the bill. If you have run out of similar titles to watch, this is a strong next pick.
