She eventually finds the mouse, who manages to outwit her like the Gruffalo before! Helena Bonham Carter and Shirley Henderson lead a cast that never lets the concept overwhelm the characters. It hit screens in 2011. What separates The Gruffalo's Child from lesser genre entertainment is a willingness to let the concept cost the characters something. There is real craft here, even in the moments that do not fully land.
