The Shape of Water

The Shape of Water is currently streaming in Australia on Disney Plus, and in the US on HBO Max Amazon Channel and YouTube TV, and it earns its premise rather than just borrowing genre trappings. It knows exactly what kind of film it is from the opening scene, and never loses that thread. A 7/10 rating says what the writing already makes obvious: this one works. There is a reason The Shape of Water keeps coming up in conversation. The Shape of Water treats its concept seriously enough to follow it all the way through. An other-worldly story, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1962, where a mute janitor working at a lab falls in love with an amphibious man being held captive there and devises a plan to help him escape. Sally Hawkins and Michael Shannon lead a cast that never lets the concept overwhelm the characters. The Shape of Water came out in 2017. The rules of The Shape of Water's world are consistent enough that the big swings never feel like cheating. It delivers reliably on what it promises, which is more than most of its competition manages.

Viewers burned by ambitious sci-fi that could not sustain its premise should give The Shape of Water a chance. It does not lean on comparisons to make its case. It is a manageable watch, easy to fit into a single evening. Sally Hawkins anchors it with a performance that makes the more abstract moments feel personal.
