Twisted arrived without much fanfare and built its audience the hard way — through word of mouth. The plotting gives Twisted its backbone, but it is the characters you come back for. Recently promoted and transferred to the homicide division, Inspector Jessica Shepard feels pressure to prove herself -- and what better way than by solving San Francisco's latest murder? However, as Shepard and her partner, Mike Delmarco, soon discover, the victim shared a romantic connection to her. As more of Shepard's ex-lovers turn up dead, her mind starts to become unstable, and she begins to wonder if she could be the very killer she's trying to track down. Ashley Judd and Samuel L. Jackson lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was released in 2004. What distinguishes the best crime dramas from the rest is whether the character work can carry scenes where the mystery takes a breath — Twisted passes that test consistently. There is real craft here, even in the moments that do not fully land.

If you cannot walk away from a good mystery, Twisted will keep you hooked. It stands on its own even without an obvious comparison point. Best experienced as a single, sustained watch from start to finish. Ashley Judd carries scenes that would sink a lesser production. The resolution feels inevitable rather than arbitrary, which is rarer than it sounds.
