When David Smallbone's successful music company collapses, he moves his family from Australia to the United States in search of a brighter future. With nothing more than their six children, their suitcases, and their love of music, David and his pregnant wife Helen set out to rebuild their lives from the ground up. Based on a remarkable true story, a mum's faith stands against all odds; and inspires her husband and children to hold onto theirs. Joel Smallbone and Daisy Betts lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was released in 2024. The animation style is distinctive enough to be immediately recognisable, but it is the writing underneath that keeps viewers coming back for more. There is real craft here, even in the moments that do not fully land.

Animation fans will appreciate the craft, but Unsung Hero works for viewers who do not typically seek out animation too. It has built its own audience without needing a direct comparison. The complete film is available and best experienced without too much prior knowledge of where it goes. Joel Smallbone's voice work is a big part of what makes it distinctive.
