As a volcano begins forming in the La Brea Tar Pits, the director of the city's emergency management service, working with a geologist, must then use every resource in the city to try and stop the volcano from consuming LA. The human element stays intact thanks to Tommy Lee Jones and Anne Heche, who anchor every scene. It hit screens in 1997. The rules of Volcano's world are consistent enough that the big swings never feel like cheating. It knows exactly what it is, and does not try to be anything else.
