Watchmen

If you want science fiction that respects its own premise, Watchmen is available in the US on HBO Max Amazon Channel right now. It knows exactly what kind of film it is from the opening scene, and never loses that thread. A 7/10 rating says what the writing already makes obvious: this one works. Watchmen arrived without much fanfare and built its audience the hard way — through word of mouth. Watchmen treats its concept seriously enough to follow it all the way through. In a gritty and alternate 1985, the glory days of costumed vigilantes have been brought to a close by a government crackdown. But after one of the masked veterans is brutally murdered, an investigation into the killer is initiated. The reunited heroes set out to prevent their own destruction, but in doing so they uncover a sinister plot that puts all of humanity in grave danger. Malin Åkerman and Patrick Wilson lead a cast that keeps the bigger ideas grounded in something human. It hit screens in 2009. The world-building is meticulous enough to sustain multiple rewatches, with details early on that only make sense later. It delivers reliably on what it promises, which is more than most of its competition manages.

For late-night viewing or a proper weekend binge, Watchmen fits the bill. It does not lean on comparisons to make its case. Short enough to finish in one sitting, substantial enough to feel satisfying. Malin Åkerman anchors it with a performance that makes the more abstract moments feel personal. If you have been burned by ambitious sci-fi before, this is the exception.
