Archer Season 9 arrived without much fanfare and built its audience the hard way — through word of mouth. Archer Season 9 gets the fundamentals right first, then finds room to get weird with it. Season nine finds our hero, the barely functioning alcoholic seaplane pilot Sterling Archer, resting on a lovely island in the South Pacific circa 1939. While the rest of the world is concerned about the impending Second World War, Archer is only concerned with who’s buying his next drink. Along with his trusty co-pilot Pam, Sterling must navigate quicksand, cannibals, super-intelligent monkeys, poison darts, pirates, and did we mention quicksand? H. Jon Benjamin and Judy Greer lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was aired in 2018. Archer Season 9 earns its laughs from character rather than situation, which is why it does not wear thin the way pure farce tends to. The hit rate here is high enough that skipping ahead never feels like an option.
Comedy fans looking for a reliably funny watch will find it in Archer Season 9. It rewards viewers regardless of what else is in their watch history. It is a manageable watch, easy to fit into a single week. H. Jon Benjamin anchors an ensemble with real chemistry. Genuinely funny, consistently, across the whole run.
