Chobits Season 1 does what great comedies rarely manage — it is actually funny, consistently, across the whole run. After failing the university entrance exam, Hideki Motosuwa decides to attend a tutoring course in Tokyo. He also looks for a part-time job to earn a little money. In this city, he discovers the “Persocoms”, personal computers in human form. Tomokazu Sugita and Rie Tanaka lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was aired in 2002. Chobits Season 1 earns its laughs from character rather than situation, which is why it does not wear thin the way pure farce tends to. It rarely drops the ball, and when it does, it recovers fast.

Comedy fans looking for a reliably funny watch will find it in Chobits Season 1. It stands on its own even without an obvious comparison point. A contained run means every episode is doing real work. Tomokazu Sugita's comic timing carries it through its weaker moments. The kind of comedy you recommend to someone who claims they do not watch much.
