Clannad Season 1

2007 22 Episodes Animation · Comedy ⭐ 8/10

If you are after a comedy that actually makes you laugh out loud, Clannad Season 1 is available on and right now. A compact run that never overstays its welcome. With 487 viewer ratings on TMDB, this is not a title flying under the radar. Watch it for Yuichi Nakamura — stay for everyone else around them. Start it whenever you need something guaranteed to land.

Whatever else is competing for your attention this week, Clannad Season 1 is worth clearing space for. Clannad Season 1 gets the fundamentals right first, then finds room to get weird with it. Tortured by his past and pained by an uncertain future, Tomoya drifts through life with an almost overwhelming anger and emptiness. But when he meets the mysterious, beautiful, and shy Nagisa, his world seems to change. Drawn in by her gentle but lonely spirit, he begins to experience the joy life can bring. Yuichi Nakamura and Mai Nakahara lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was aired in 2007. The real test of any comedy is whether it is still funny once you know all the jokes, and Clannad Season 1 holds up on rewatch in a way that separates it from one-off curiosities. It rarely drops the ball, and when it does, it recovers fast.

Clannad Season 1 is the kind of thing you put on in the background and end up fully watching. If you have run out of similar titles to watch, this is a strong next pick. Best experienced as a single, sustained watch if your schedule allows. Yuichi Nakamura's comic timing carries it through its weaker moments. The kind of comedy you recommend to someone who claims they do not watch much.
