Across 1 season, the show has had time to find its rhythm and keep it. 22 viewers have already rated it on TMDB — the kind of consensus that does not happen by accident. Hiroko Taguchi brings more to the role than the format usually demands. Put it on tonight and see for yourself.
Ef: A Tale Of Memories & Melodies Season 1 arrived without much fanfare and built its audience the hard way — through word of mouth. Visually distinctive and narratively ambitious, Ef: A Tale Of Memories & Melodies Season 1 operates well above the genre average. On Christmas Eve, Hiro Hirono's bike is stolen by a girl chasing a thief who stole her purse. He gives chase and finds her unconscious and his bike ruined. The girl, Miyako Miyamura, soon awakes and the two begin to talk. Hiroko Taguchi and Junko Okada lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was aired in 2007. The animation style is distinctive enough to be immediately recognisable, but it is the writing underneath that keeps viewers coming back for more. There is real craft here, even in the moments that do not fully land.
If you have been sleeping on Ef: A Tale Of Memories & Melodies Season 1 because of the format, the format is not the issue here. It does not lean on comparisons to make its case. Short enough to finish in a weekend, substantial enough to feel satisfying. Visually distinctive and narratively ambitious in ways that hold up regardless of format. Worth watching in order from the beginning.
