Right now you can watch GARO Season 5 on streaming — and it goes further with its ideas than most genre entertainment bothers to. The show says what it needs to say in a single season, no filler. An 8/10 rating says what the writing already makes obvious: this one works. Saori Hara leads a cast that never lets the concept overwhelm the characters. Put it on tonight and see for yourself.
There is a reason GARO Season 5 keeps coming up in conversation. GARO Season 5 uses its genre premise as cover for asking bigger questions. After the events of The One to Shine Light into the Darkness, Ryuga Dougai, the current Garo, is assigned to oversee matters in Line City alongside the Makai Priestess Rian. There, meeting new allies and enemies alike, the two first face a rogue Madōgu who sees humanity's destruction as the only way to end the Horror threat and then a pair of Horrors who were once Makai Order members that are intent to revive an ancient Horror. Saori Hara and Hiroki Nakajima lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was aired in 2015. The rules of GARO Season 5's world are consistent enough that the big swings never feel like cheating. The hit rate here is high enough that skipping ahead never feels like an option.
GARO Season 5 is satisfying on multiple levels — something to watch and something to think about after. It has built its own audience without needing a direct comparison. A contained run means every episode is doing real work. Watch for Saori Hara in particular — the performance elevates the material. Satisfying on multiple levels.
