Whatever else is competing for your attention this week, Slayers Season 2 is worth clearing space for. Slayers Season 2 uses its genre premise as cover for asking bigger questions. In the kingdom of Xoana, Lina Inverse and Gourry Gabriev unexpectedly come across their old companions, Zelgadis Graywords and Princess Ameilia Wil Tesla Saillune. Upon their reunion, the friends end up easily foiling the King of Xoana and his daughter's dastardly plans of world conquest. Soon after, it is revealed that Zelgadis is in search of the world's most valuable magical tome, the Claire Bible, hoping to discover a method to recover his human body among the many secrets sheltered within it. Megumi Hayashibara and Yasunori Matsumoto lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was aired in 1996. Slayers Season 2 resists the temptation to explain everything, trusting the audience to sit with ambiguity. It rarely drops the ball, and when it does, it recovers fast.
Slayers Season 2 is satisfying on multiple levels — something to watch and something to think about after. It has built its own audience without needing a direct comparison. It is a manageable watch, easy to fit into a single week. Megumi Hayashibara grounds the bigger ideas in something human. Once you are in, you will want to talk about it.
