Slayers Season 5 is currently streaming on major platforms, and it earns its premise rather than just borrowing genre trappings. The show says what it needs to say in a single season, no filler. An 8/10 rating says what the writing already makes obvious: this one works. Megumi Hayashibara sets the tone, and the world-building does the rest. There is a reason Slayers Season 5 keeps coming up in conversation. What makes Slayers Season 5 work is that the ideas never crowd out the people having them. To find a way in rescuing Pokota's country Taforashia which was sealed by Rezo, Lina and her group are in search for the Hellmaster's jar in what the Red Priest placed his soul after death. Zelgadis is willing to do anything to get the jar for changing back into a human while Zuuma is plotting on revenge and accomplishing assignment in killing Lina Inverse. Still a big mystery for her and the others is what Xellos is aiming for in this battle. Megumi Hayashibara and Yasunori Matsumoto lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was aired in 2009. The rules of Slayers Season 5's world are consistent enough that the big swings never feel like cheating. The hit rate here is high enough that skipping ahead never feels like an option.
For late-night viewing or a proper weekend binge, Slayers Season 5 fits the bill. It stands on its own even without an obvious comparison point. Best experienced as a single, sustained watch if your schedule allows. Watch for Megumi Hayashibara in particular — the performance elevates the material. Satisfying on multiple levels.
