Schoolgirl Maddy Smith is a wolfblood, daughter of parents who turn into wolves at full moon, which will be her destiny when she is older. Surly new pupil Rhydian Morris arrives at Maddy's school. He has super-human strength when taunted and, when angry, involuntarily changes into a wolf. Bobby Lockwood and Aimee Kelly lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was aired in 2012. Wolfblood Season 1 resists the temptation to explain everything, trusting the audience to sit with ambiguity. The hit rate here is high enough that skipping ahead never feels like an option.

For late-night viewing or a proper weekend binge, Wolfblood Season 1 fits the bill. It stands on its own even without an obvious comparison point.
