Clannad has quietly become one of the more dependable comedies currently available in the US on HiDive. Every one of its 2 seasons holds up. With 487 viewer ratings on TMDB, this is not a title flying under the radar. Yuichi Nakamura's performance alone is worth the time investment. Start it on HiDive whenever you need something guaranteed to land.
Clannad is not trying to be everything to everyone, and that focus is exactly what makes it work. The jokes in Clannad land because the characters underneath them are worth caring about. Tomoya Okazaki is a third year high school student resentful of his life. His mother passed away from a car accident when he was younger, causing his father to resort to alcohol and cigarettes. This results in fights between the two until Tomoya's shoulder is injured in a fight. The chemistry Yuichi Nakamura and Mai Nakahara bring to it does a lot of the heavy lifting. Across 2 seasons (2007–2009), it never lost the thread that made it worth starting. Clannad earns its laughs from character rather than situation, which is why it does not wear thin the way pure farce tends to. It rarely drops the ball, and when it does, it recovers fast.
Comedy fans looking for a reliably funny watch will find it in Clannad. Fans of The "Hentai" Prince and the Stony Cat will recognise the sensibility here immediately. A contained run means every episode is doing real work. Yuichi Nakamura anchors an ensemble with real chemistry. Genuinely funny, consistently, across the whole run.
