Rules of Engagement is a comedy about the different phases of male/female relationships, as seen through the eyes of a newly engaged couple, Adam and Jennifer, a long-time married pair, Jeff and Audrey, and a single guy on the prowl, Russell. As they find out, the often confusing stages of a relationship can seem like being on a roller coaster. People can describe the ride to you, but to really know what it's like you have to experience it for yourself. Between them, Patrick Warburton and David Spade carry the comedy without ever forcing it. Across 7 seasons (2007–2013), it never lost the thread that made it worth starting. Rules of Engagement earns its laughs from character rather than situation, which is why it does not wear thin the way pure farce tends to. There is real craft here, even in the moments that do not fully land.

If you need a comedy that actually makes you laugh, Rules of Engagement is a strong candidate. Fans of Will & Grace will recognise the sensibility here immediately. 7 seasons gives the story real room to develop. Patrick Warburton anchors an ensemble with real chemistry. Genuinely funny, consistently, across the whole run.
