The writing in Cheerleader Nightmare treats its characters as people first, plot devices second. While flying a drone, a teenager sees her boyfriend cheating with the school's head cheerleader. When the cheerleader turns up murdered, her boyfriend becomes the prime suspect, and only she can find the real killer before another murder takes place.... Melissa Ponzio and Taylor Murphy lead a cast doing genuinely serious work here. It was released in 2018. The performances in Cheerleader Nightmare do a lot of work in the silences between the dialogue. There is real craft here, even in the moments that do not fully land.

Viewers drawn to character-driven storytelling will find plenty to sit with in Cheerleader Nightmare. It does not lean on comparisons to make its case. Best experienced as a single, sustained watch from start to finish. Melissa Ponzio's work here is the kind that gets referenced in career retrospectives.
