When Madam Queen—the powerful woman who runs the scam in Harlem—is arrested, Ellsworth 'Bumpy' Johnson takes over the business and must resist an invasion from a merciless mobster. The writing gets a boost from Laurence Fishburne and Tim Roth, who sell every scene they're in. It was released in 1997. What makes Hoodlum hold up is that the resolution matters less than how the characters get there. There is real craft here, even in the moments that do not fully land.
