Dacre Montgomery leads a cast that never lets the concept overwhelm the characters. There is no real reason to keep putting it off — it is right there on Amazon Prime Video.

Whatever else is competing for your attention this week, Power Rangers is worth clearing space for. Power Rangers uses its genre premise as cover for asking bigger questions. Five ordinary teens must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove — and the world — is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so, they will have to overcome their real-life issues and before it’s too late, band together as the Power Rangers. Dacre Montgomery and RJ Cyler lead a cast that never lets the concept overwhelm the characters. It was released in 2017. The rules of Power Rangers's world are consistent enough that the big swings never feel like cheating. It knows exactly what it is, and does not try to be anything else.

Sci-fi fans who want ideas alongside the spectacle will find Power Rangers genuinely rewarding. It does not lean on comparisons to make its case. Short enough to finish in one sitting, substantial enough to feel satisfying. Watch for Dacre Montgomery in particular — the performance elevates the material. Satisfying on multiple levels.
