Banana Fish Season 1

2018 24 Episodes Animation · Drama ⭐ 9/10

Banana Fish Season 1 has quietly become one of the more dependable crime dramas currently available. The show says what it needs to say in a single season, no filler. A 9/10 rating says what the writing already makes obvious: this one works. Yuma Uchida anchors it, but the writing does the real work. There is no real reason to keep putting it off.

Banana Fish Season 1 is not trying to be everything to everyone, and that focus is exactly what makes it work. The plotting in Banana Fish Season 1 is tight enough that the twists feel earned rather than assembled. A teenaged gang leader in New York City faces his abuser and rival gangs alongside a photojournalist from Japan as they investigate a deadly new drug. Yuma Uchida and Kenji Nojima lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was aired in 2018. What makes Banana Fish Season 1 hold up is that the resolution matters less than how the characters get there. This is the rare one where the reputation undersells the reality.

If you cannot walk away from a good mystery, Banana Fish Season 1 will keep you hooked. It has built its own audience without needing a direct comparison. Short enough to finish in a weekend, substantial enough to feel satisfying. Yuma Uchida carries scenes that would sink a lesser production. The resolution feels inevitable rather than arbitrary, which is rarer than it sounds.
