Pokémon Season 1

1997 82 Episodes Animation · Action & Adventure ⭐ 8/10

Pokémon Season 1 is currently streaming on and , and it earns its premise rather than just borrowing genre trappings. A single, tightly-focused season means there is plenty to get through without ever feeling padded. 2,208 people have weighed in on TMDB, and the verdict leans heavily positive. Rica Matsumoto sets the tone, and the world-building does the rest. Start it whenever you need something guaranteed to land.

There is a reason Pokémon Season 1 keeps coming up in conversation. Pokémon Season 1 treats its concept seriously enough to follow it all the way through. It’s Ash Ketchum’s tenth birthday, and he’s ready to do what many 10-year-olds in the Kanto region set out to do—become a Pokémon Trainer! Things don’t go exactly the way he planned when he ends up with a Pikachu instead of a standard first Pokémon, and winning Gym Badges turns out to be much tougher than he thought. Luckily he’s got former Gym Leaders Brock and Misty at his side, along with a bevy of new Pokémon friends, including Bulbasaur, Squirtle, and Charmander. Rica Matsumoto and Ikue Otani lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was aired in 1997. What separates Pokémon Season 1 from lesser genre entertainment is a willingness to let the concept cost the characters something. The consistency throughout is what elevates it — not every moment is the best, but none of them are a reason to stop watching.

For late-night viewing or a proper weekend binge, Pokémon Season 1 fits the bill. It stands on its own even without an obvious comparison point. It is a manageable watch, easy to fit into a single week. Rica Matsumoto anchors it with a performance that makes the more abstract moments feel personal. If you have been burned by ambitious sci-fi before, this is the exception.
