Pokémon Season 3

1999 41 Episodes Animation · Action & Adventure ⭐ 8/10

Pokémon Season 3 has built a real following on and among viewers who want their sci-fi to think as hard as it looks. A compact run that never overstays its welcome. With 2,208 viewer ratings on TMDB, this is not a title flying under the radar. Rica Matsumoto sets the tone, and the world-building does the rest. There is no real reason to keep putting it off.

Part of the current wave of titles people are actually watching, Pokémon Season 3 earns its spot. The world-building is meticulous, but it is the characters who carry Pokémon Season 3 through its more ambitious moments. Upon returning to Pallet Town, Ash and Misty reunite with Brock and set out on the next stage of their Pokémon journey—the Johto region! Though he still has an errand to run for Professor Oak, Ash jumps with both feet into the Johto League, taking on a couple of Gym Leaders and adding Pokémon like Totodile and Chikorita to his team. Rica Matsumoto and Ikue Otani lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was aired in 1999. The rules of Pokémon Season 3's world are consistent enough that the big swings never feel like cheating. The hit rate here is high enough that skipping ahead never feels like an option.

Pokémon Season 3 is satisfying on multiple levels — something to watch and something to think about after. It rewards viewers regardless of what else is in their watch history. Best experienced as a single, sustained watch if your schedule allows. Rica Matsumoto's performance is the anchor the more ambitious moments need. The world-building pays off in ways you will not anticipate on a first watch.
