Right now you can watch Slayers Season 4 on streaming — and it goes further with its ideas than most genre entertainment bothers to. The 1-season run is exactly the right length for what it is doing. 51 people have weighed in on TMDB, and the verdict leans heavily positive. Megumi Hayashibara anchors it with a performance that grounds the bigger ideas in something human. There is no real reason to keep putting it off.
Slayers Season 4 is not trying to be everything to everyone, and that focus is exactly what makes it work. Slayers Season 4 uses its genre premise as cover for asking bigger questions. Having lost the Sword of Light in the previous battle, Lina and Gourry continue their journey in search of a replacement weapon. On the way, the two of them meet up with Amelia and Zelgadis in the kingdom of Luvinagard while taunting some pirates. Lina is happy to reunite with her old friends, but appearing before her is Luvinagard's Inspector of the Special Investigative Unit; a man called Wizer. Megumi Hayashibara and Yasunori Matsumoto lead a cast that brings real weight to the material. It was aired in 2008. Slayers Season 4 resists the temptation to explain everything, trusting the audience to sit with ambiguity. It rarely drops the ball, and when it does, it recovers fast.
Slayers Season 4 is satisfying on multiple levels — something to watch and something to think about after. It stands on its own even without an obvious comparison point. The complete run is available and best experienced without too much prior knowledge of where it goes. Megumi Hayashibara grounds the bigger ideas in something human. Once you are in, you will want to talk about it.
